Jakob Fuglsang on the fight for the general classification on the Grand Tours

Jakob Fuglsang wants to focus on the one-day races and stage competition on the Grand Tours where he has the best chance of winning. The 35-year-old Danish cyclist of the Astana team took part in 15 Grand Tours and only twice – in the Tour de France 2013 and the Giro d’Italia 2020 – entered the top 10 of the general classification. But in the classics, Jacob Fuglsang became the winner of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Monument in 2019, and this year he won another Monument – Lombardy. In 2021, the Danish rider will start the ninth season in the Kazakh cycling team.

In an interview with TV2 Sport, Jacob Fuglsang said that he does not want to fight for high places in the overall standings in the Grand Tours in the future.

Jakob Fuglsang: “If everything depended on me personally, I would not fight for the general classification on Grand Tours in the future. Of course, it would be cool to climb the podium of the Grand Tour, but the places outside the podium are no longer interesting for me. I know that I can take 6th place in the Giro or Tour de France. But in order to achieve the podium, I need to be at my peak, and I think the team must be stronger.

Now the teams that are fighting for the Grand Tours are incredibly well organized to achieve this goal. They are strong on many fronts. And, probably, at the moment in this they are a little stronger than Astana.

In the future, if I was the only one to decide, I would like to focus more on stages, mountain jersey or something similar. It might be much more interesting to go and try to win a stage than doing the same thing every day.
